I dodged a bullet yesterday

A lightening bolt that was a bullet. I heard the crash and yes, I yelped a little (me & Cha Cha both), but until I was able to go outside and see how close this house came to being hit with a direct bolt of lightening, I was stunned. It actually set off our smoke detectors, it was that powerful and close.

This tree, not 20 feet from my back door, received a direct hit. It hit the trunk at the widest part and I think that if it hit just 5 feet higher we might have been sharing our bed with a limb. What also amazed me was where we found splinters of wood.

One landed next door on the branch of a tree 10 feet up and 15 feet away.

The whole ground was covered with shreds 10 feet from the hit tree.

Every inch of backyard has splinters scattered everywhere.

I know it doesn't look like much but if it had hit the roof it most definitely would have started a fire and that is not a good thing.

If anyone is interested in reading about lightening, this site is how I found out how close I came to being hit.

Once The Nudge saw the yard and tree he wasn't quite so mad I called him home from work and gave me some credit for calling in a panic (well, we were getting water in the basement and I had no idea where he put our back-up pump). It rained so hard for so long, the water just came pouring down the hill and into our yard.

North Carolina is starting to really look good.....

I think that The Nudge owes me a margarita, ooooh yeah!!

Yikes, close call! Reminds me of when I was a kid. We lived on the inside of a huge circle and my Dad thought someone's house blew up one day. He told us all to stay where we were and went running through the back yard. Turns out a ginormous tree in front of someone's house on the other side of the circle got struck by lightening and pretty much imploded!

There were chunks all the way down the street. The force of the impact literally shook our house to the point where the bubble gum I was chewing went down and right back up my throat. It was pretty freaky. I was probably 8 at the time and thought it was an earthquake.

Thankfully, nobody was injured in that incident or yours!!

I will tell you when they told us to shut the computer and phone off during a thunderstorm, now I know why. If it had been closer the lightening could have traveled through the plumbing or electrical wires and I wouldn't be here to talk about it. I have lots more respect now. Thanks for your story, too.

LOL - That brings up another childhood memory. When I first learned about it traveling through pipes...I was at a motel on Cape Cod and was in the shower, having just gotten back from the beach. All of a sudden, someone was pounding on the window and scared the bejeezus out of me. It was my aunt yelling that I was going to get electrocuted. I thought she had gone crazy. :)
